    This beautiful bust of the late Hon. W.W. Thomas of Portland, former Minister to Sweden and the founder of the Swedish Colony at New Sweden, was recently unveiled in Portland, and is to be presented to the Town of New Sweden by “Father” Thomas’ widow.

 

• S. W. Collins & Son started a crew of ten men to Ashland on Tuesday after a drive of 250,000 cedar.
• Fred Goud, Ralph Hendrix and A. W. V. Pike visited Fort Fairfield Sunday afternoon on bicycles.

115 Years Ago- May 19, 1897

• D. E. Johnson, superintendent of the Caribou fish hatchery visited Madawaska, Cross and Square Lakes, Saturday, in which waters he deposited 100,000 smelt spawn.
• Miss Lula Savage, teacher of the French intermediate school, gave her pupils, numbering 38, a buckboard ride about town last Thursday.

    Vaughn Norrel, assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 181, Boy Scouts, was presented with a Life Scout award, and seven second class badges were awarded at a troop Court of Honor at the Gray Memorial Methodist church. The presentations were made by Robert L. Powell, local Scout Commissioner.

115 Years Ago- May 12, 1897

• Potatoes have taken a tumble in the market and are being purchased for $1.50 per barrel today, where a week ago $2.20 was paid.
• W. H. Theriault, the liveryman, had his street sprinkler out for the first time this season. The dust had been flying in clouds for several days and the services of the sprinkler were appreciated by our citizens.

    Among those taking part in the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Caribou Veterans Honor Roll was David Cyr of the Caribou High School Band.

115 Years Ago-May 5, 1897

• L. W. Pelchier, manufacturer of coffins and caskets and repairer of furniture has moved into the basement stores of the Clark block on Sweden Street.
• D. J. Wardwell of Perham, a veteran of the Civil War, has offered to recruit a company of sharpshooters who would make it quite interesting for a number of Spanish troops.

    Due to changes in the office of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Caribou, Miss Thelma E. Brown, left, and Miss Margaret E. Lovely have been promoted to supervisors’ positions. They are graduates of Caribou High School and very popular with the company patrons.

 

• John Roberts, who has been taking a census of Caribou’s school children who completed his work Saturday reports the number of scholars of this town to be 1,849.
• Henry Witham, who has been a valued employee in this office for some time, is clerking in Fair’s Cash Bazaar.
